Opera vs. Firefox: Which is better?
It is pretty much a well known fact by now that the Internet Explorer browser is sorely lacking in features, security and speed, and as a result many people have moved onto other browsers. The two most popular alternative browsers are Mozilla Firefox and Opera, and this has left many people baffled by which is better. Both browsers boast a myriad of great features like tabbed browsing, integrated search, speed, and improved security but otherwise they are very different. I must say that Opera is much faster than Firefox, ecspecially
when loading GeoCities pages. Opera has no unpatched security vulnerabilities, as opposed to 4 in Firefox.
Opera's "wand" password manager is far superior to Firefox's. Firefox inexplicably cannot save passwords for Yahoo! and MSN, and can only save one account for other websites. Opera on the other hand has the ability to save multiple accounts per websites - very useful for me with Yahoo! since I use two accounts; one for fantasy sports, groups, etc., and one for my website.
Opera also offers many more features than Firefox does, as it is a full Internet suite rather than just a web browser. This means Opera comes complete with an e-mail client, newsreader, and other stuff of the like. The way that Opera and Firefox handle RSS feeds is very different. Firfox has a very convenient "live bookmark" method, which allows you to add the feed to your toolbar and see a drop-down menu of the latest blog post, news, forum posts et. al. Opera, on the other hand has a very elaborate newsreader. It's not as convenient, but you can set it to alert you whenever the feed is updated, so overall I'd say it's superior. Another GREAT feature about Opera is it's "sessions". Whenever you quit Opera you can continue from whatever you were doing the last time you were on. This is very useful if you lose an Internet connection or if the browser crashes, because you don't have to deal with the hassle of signing in again, finding your pages etc. This will be really useful when updating my site, as if my browser crashed while I was making changes, I would lose them all if not for this.
Probably the only superior feature of Firefox over Opera is their extensions. Firefox's website offers a plethora of neat add-ons for Firefox like weather and stuff. Opera has something somewhat comparable, as on their website you can customize your browser in many ways and even download widgets. For me, I don't need a whole lot of extra bells on my browser, but for those who like that kind of stuff, Firefox is great. But really, is it worth it to sacrifice superior overall technology for extra unimportant stuff?
Overall, I'd say that Opera is the superior browser, but you really can't go wrong with Firefox either. Its is a very capable browser that I used happily for several months,
before I started using Opera 9.
